DescriptionEimear McBride (1976- ) is an Irish writer. At the age of 17, McBride moved to London for university, where she earned a BA from Drama Centre London. Her debut novel, A Girl is a Half-formed Thing (2013), is written as a stream of consciousness and portrays the story of a young girl struggling with her familial relations and sexuality. McBride has also published the novels The Lesser Bohemians (2016) and Strange Hotel (2020), as well as a collection of short stories, Mouthpiece (2020). In addition to her fiction works, she penned a non-fiction book titled Something Out of Place: Women and Disgust (2021), which questions societal perceptions of women.
regarding feminism and the perceptions of others concerning women. Furthermore, McBride has achieved numerous prizes for her literary creations, including the Women’s Prize for Fiction, Goldsmiths Prize, and Irish Novel of the Year Awards. 

In this interview, McBride discusses Modernism, the importance of her background in theatre to her writing, and the hardships of publishing her work. She also talks about the artistic influences on The Lesser Bohemians, which includes films and the band Tindersticks, as well as other artistic influences on her writing. McBride also explains her thoughts on writing about taboo subjects, such as the suicidal ideation in Strange Hotel, and expresses her feelings about writing what she wants regardless of others’ opinions. Additionally, she delves into the translation process of her novels and her relationships with the translators themselves.

The interview was conducted by Alinne Fernandes, Ph.D., Senior Lecturer of the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) in the English Department, at the Henrique Fontes Auditorium-UFSC in Florianópolis, Brazil as part of the VI Jornada do Núcleo de Estudos Irlandeses, “Irish Modernisms”, on November 9th, 2022.

DescriptionEclipsed is a two-act play written by playwright Patricia Burke Brogan. Her work addresses the inhuman and marginalizing treatment of ‘fallen women’ by the Irish government and the country’s religious institutions in the 1990s.
The play received a dramatic reading by Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) in 2017 as part of an extension project by the Center for Irish Studies — Núcleo de Estudos Irlandeses (NEI) — in collaboration with the Performing Arts course at the aforementioned institution.
